| Are winter tires necessary? | | So I just moved to Chicago (from Texas) and everyone is telling me how horrible it is to drive in the snow, which is something I've never experienced. Some people have told me that I should get winter tires because I'll be especially vulnerable if I've never driven in the snow before, but they seem expensive and I don't know if I want to spend hundreds of dollars on tires. I was reading about them ( http://www.thesecretmechanic.com/ ) but honestly, I'm thinking no.What do you people who live in snowy areas think? How bad is Chicago going to get hit this year? Do I need winter tires? My car is front wheel drive if that matters. Thanks!

| | First SnowFall Do you put on winter tires and when? | | I just had are first major snowfall of the year here in Montreal. I am sure some unsuspecting motorists got caught without winter tires. Here they are almost an essential. Have you put your winter tires on? Where are you from? Do you really need winter tires? | |

| What kind of winter tires would you recommend? | | Winter is fast approaching, and I need some winter tires for my new sportscar. I've heard good things about Blizzaks, but I wanted to get some first hand opinions from other people. What type of winter tires do you have? What type of vehicle do you use them on? Let me know what you think of them - how do they handle in snow and on ice? Are they studded or non-studded? Thanks! | |
| | How to Ensure Your Car is in Good Condition for the Winter? | | The cars must be in good shape for the winter - that means winter tires. There are however, a number of other steps motorist can take to ensure they get through the winter safely and in comfort. Checking your spark plugs, rubbing silicon or glycerin on your seals, putting anti-freeze on your radiator are some of them...Can you sight other useful things you can do to keep your car running during winter? | |

| snow tires, do you get them | | Well this one is directed to you winter dwellers. I am curious as to how many of you have winter tires.
I think here in the south central BC it is a must. With our road conditions it only makes sense to have a complete set of winters. What do you have and why? | |
| | Winter driving | | What are your thoughts of winter driving? Do you manage? I hate the fact that I have to change to winter tires. Last year, I did not change, and just kept my all season tires. There were a couple of fishtailing, but I made it through OK. At where you at, do you have any troubles of people driving on snowy roads? | |

| What's the weather like? | | Well, here in Edmonton AB, Canada we are experiencing a blizzard. There is blowing snow, poor visibility and currently minus 27 degrees Celsius with wind chill. A drive to work that took 20min for me yesterday, took 1 hour today. It will be minus 43 degrees Celsius with wind chill overnight tonight, but looks a lot better for Friday and on.I can handle the cold (although minus 30 and colder is uncomfortable when outside), but the worst part of this is driving. I'm glad I got winter tires & heat that works! This is the thing about living here, you get a taste of the weather in both directions. Plus 30 in the summer and minus 30 in the winter. I wouldn't change a thing. What's the weather like in your neck of the woods? | |
